After having one dog with severe allergies, I started making homemade dog food. After trial and error and three years of testing, I am finally ready to share the most straightforward, cost-effective way to make homemade dog food.
Notes:
Add daily vitamins to food before serving.
The food will store for up to four days in the fridge and three months in the freezer.
Before starting, consult with your veterinarian before ensuring it is a good option for your fur baby.
Now time for math.
Dogs weight in ounces * 2% - 3% = Daily ounces of homemade dog food.
For example, my smallest dog Billie weighs 5.5 pounds, and she gets 1.5 ounces twice per day. (5.5 * 16 = 88 ounces * 3% = 2.64 ounces)
Are you someone who wants to try making homemade dog food for your babies? Then stop here. This recipe for human grade dog food is meant for you and your fur baby or babies.
4 1.5 pound packages of ground turkey (I get mine at Costco, best price)
50 ounces of dog-friendly frozen vegetables (best price at Costco)
2 cups short-grain brown rice, well rinsed
2 tablespoons olive oil
On two non-stick sheet pans, press out two packages of ground turkey per pan.
On a separate sheet pan, add the frozen veggies. Toss with olive oil.
Place sheet pans in the oven at 350˚ for 40 minutes. While the turkey and veggies are cooking, make the brown rice according to the package directions.
When turkey and veggies are done, break them down with a potato masher, scissors, or a food processor (this is the easiest way). Place ingredients in a large bowl and the brown rice and mix until well combined.
Cool before serving.
